AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, holds the belief that all students from all backgrounds are capable of excelling academically if given access to high level classes and appropriate supports. We provide these supports to the students at Cheatham by ensuring that WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies are regularly used in all lessons in all classes.
We also offer an AVID elective class to students in Grades 6-8. Here, students can work together in small groups to discuss concepts they may be struggling with and learn from each other as to how to approach them. Twice weekly college students lead the tutorials to provide AVID students with extra support. The AVID elective class is a commitment for our students, and therefore requires an application and an interview before a student may be enrolled.
We at Cheatham firmly believe that the strategies and skills learned by the students in the AVID class will best prepare them for college and careers that are in their futures. It is a program that has been credited for the success of students for decades and continues to grow at a rapid pace.
