Kindergarten Round Up is February 5 for Students Starting in August 2019

Parents with students starting Kindergarten in August 2019 are invited to register their child during our annual Kindergarten Round Up event on February 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. You will also have the opportunity to meet the teachers and visit kindergarten classrooms. Children registered on this date will receive a free gift.

Kindergarten Round Up will take place at all Laveen schools with the exception of Vista del Sur, which requires an assessment prior to enrolling. Kindergartners enrolled at Paseo Pointe must be part of the Dual Language Immersion program, a 50/50 model where students spend half their day in a classroom where teaching and learning is conducted in Spanish and the other half in English.

Students may be enrolled in any of our schools regardless of where they live, space permitting. Families living outside of a particular school’s transportation zone will be responsible for providing transportation.

Please bring the following items to register your child.
* Proof of Residence (examples include: utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage statement, etc.)
* Child’s Immunization Record
* Child’s Original Birth Certificate (copies not accepted)
* Parent/Guardian’s Photo ID

Children must be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2019 to register. Children turning 5 after August 31, but by December 31, may be evaluated for early entrance in May.

Laveen offers free Full Day Kindergarten at all schools.

Donate to Laveen Schools and Receive a Credit On Your 2018 Taxes

You can reduce the amount you owe in taxes by making a donation to Laveen schools through Arizona’s Public School Tax Credit Program. Tax credit contributions may only be used to support character education and fee-based extracurricular activities such as after-school tutoring and clubs, academic enrichment, field trips, fine art programs, and athletics.

For every dollar you donate, the amount you owe on your Arizona taxes will be that much less. This means you can reduce the amount you owe come the April deadline or increase the amount of your refund if you have tax liabilities for 2018. If you do not owe taxes, the amount you donate may be carried forward for up to five years to offset future tax liabilities. For example, if a single person owes $300 on their state taxes for 2018 and donates the maximum amount of $200, they will then only owe the state $100.

Couples filing jointly may donate any amount up to $400. Individuals may contribute up to $200.

The deadline to donate and claim a tax credit on your 2018 taxes is April 15, 2019.

Laveen To Add Third Preschool at Vista del Sur

The Laveen District will be opening its third preschool program in Fall 2019 at Vista del Sur. Vista will join Desert Meadows and Paseo Pointe schools in offering a curriculum based preschool program for children ages 3-5 years old.

Like Desert Meadows, Vista’s program will offer general education instruction. Paseo Pointe’s preschool will continue to offer dual language immersion programming. The district also operates a developmental preschool for children with special needs on the Laveen School campus.

In 2017, the Laveen District launched two new preschool programs at Paseo Pointe School – with  general education and Spanish immersion offerings. The following year, the general education program expanded to Desert Meadows School allowing Paseo Pointe to focus on dual language immersion. Both preschool programs have surpassed all expectations. They have been extremely popular, filling up quickly and remaining full throughout the year.

Construction of the preschool addition at Vista will take place in Spring 2019 in preparation of opening in August 2019. The addition is designed by EMC2 architects and will be built by SD Crane Builders, Inc.

Preschool registrations will be accepted beginning at 8:30 a.m. on February 5, 2019. Registrations must be completed in person at the Kids Klub office located at Desert Meadows School, 6855 W. Meadows Loop East. Visit our preschool page for more details including fees, requirements, and program offerings.

Cheatham Students Send Cards to Wounded Soldiers

Cheatham students in Grades 2-3 and 7-8 created greeting cards for wounded soldiers.

During the school’s Paw-to-Paw time, middle school mentors assisted their younger peers with the cards.

Cheatham first started sending cards to troops in 2017 after student council members attended a leadership conference. When they returned they wanted to find a project that would allow students in the lower grades an opportunity to work with students in the upper grades. “They thought a greeting card project would be the perfect way to bring grade levels together while sharing their appreciation for our soldiers who keep us safe,” explained student council sponsor Sandy Life.

Cheatham practices Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) which is a widely used approach to supporting positive behaviors with the intention of improving social, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students. Part of the school’s PBIS approach is “PAW to PAW” where older students mentor younger students regularly. PAW to Paw typically takes place on early release Wednesdays.

“This activity prompts students to work together while enhancing their creative and writing skills. At the same time, it supports strong character traits including sharing, caring, kindness, and showing gratitude,” Life added.
